Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCO) was founded in May 1999 and is licensed as a company under the Companies Act 1956. The then Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) formally promoted the Company as a 100% owned subsidiary within its context of liberalization and as part of efforts to reform the Power Sector.
The Government of Gujarat issued Notification No. GHU-2004-99-GEB-1104-7318-K dated 31 December 2004, notifying the Provisional
Opening Balance Sheets as of 31 March 2004 of six Transferee Companies containing the value of liabilities and assets transferred from the then Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) to the Transferee Companies. The assets belonging to the Board were divided into six businesses – one for Generation and Transmission and Four for Distribution. In connection with the exercise mentioned above, the entire generation plant of GEB was transferred to GSECL, which was already a company in existence since 1993.
In the following days, the Government of Gujarat, vide Notification of 31 March 2005, informed the public that, following the Transfer Scheme, the effective date for the transfer of assets, liabilities processes, and personnel would be extended to 1 April 2005. The holding firm Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) was formed. Been set up. Besides coordination functions, GUVNL is also handling Trading and Bulk Supply functions.
